Freemasonry in Vermont

Spring 2005

Memphremagog Lodge #65 Iinstallation ceremony in Newport, Vermont
on May 7, 2005.

Memphremagog Lodge #65 of the Free and Accepted Masons held an installation ceremony at their Masonic Temple on the Bluff road in Newport on May 7, 2005. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year at the April annual meeting: Edwin Newton - Worshipful Master; Paul Jordan - Secretary; Colin Brock - Treasurer; George Jepson - Marshal; Dick Hodge - Chaplin; Paul Lucas - Sr. Warden; Bill Smith - Jr. Warden; Steve Barrup - Sr. Deacon; Ken Canning Jr. - Jr. Deacon; Kenny Canning III - Sr. Steward; Chuck Newton - Jr. Stewart; Ron Benson - Tiler and Sidney Lambert - Organist.

After the opening of the Lodge the brothers broke for refreshment and were treated to a delicious meal prepared by Mr Benson’s daughter. When the lodge returned to labor, a memorial service was held for our dear departed bothers who have passed on during the year. Brother Don Austin of Masonic Union Lodge #16 in Troy once again graciously agreed to serve as installation officer. After installation of the new officers the group was entertained by brother Richard Cook of Central Lodge #62 in Irasburg who performed his rendition of “The Master’s Hand” with the aid of a violin and various hats depicting different characters. The story uses the allegory of an old dusty violin that appears to have little or no value until its true quality is revealed by the skilled hand of the master. Brother Don Austin recited the
poem “Ode to the Mother Lodge” written by brother Rudyard Kipling. The evening’s ceremonies were all the more enjoyable with the accompaniment of brother Sid on the organ.

The Masons (also known as Freemasons) are men of good character who strive to improve themselves and make the world a better place. They belong to the oldest and most honorable fraternity known to man. The Masons sponsor many charities and philanthropies and perform public service activities in their communities. Memphremagog Lodge #65 meets the first Tuesday of every month (except July and August) and hosts an inexpensive community breakfast on the last Saturday of every month (except November and December).
