Thomas Johnston IV was born in Marlboro, Massachusetts in 1956, the
son of Thomas Johnston III and Nancy M. (Correia) Johnston. Tom received his early
education in his home town of Bolton, Mass. graduating from Nashoba Regional High School. Tom attended the Stockbridge
School of agriculture in Amherst, Mass. receiving an A.S. in the fields of Arboriculture
and Park Management in 1976.
Following his formal education Tom relocated to Brandon, Vermont and accepted employment at Trees Incorporated, one of Vermont's largest firms involved in the fields of arboriculture and utility vegetation management. Advancing through management ranks he became vice president in 1981, and in 1998 purchased the firm from the principal stockholders.
Tom attended Castleton State College as a part time student earning a B.A. in business management in 1994. Tom married Joanne M. Surdyka of Springfield Massachusetts in 1978. They built a home in Danby, Vt. where thy currently reside enjoying the country life raising sheep, vegetables, and fruit crops.
Tom has been active in town and community projects serving on many local committees. Tom has served on local rescue squads and is a long time volunteer firefighter serving as secretary/treasurer. He is the current Assistant Chief of the Danby-Mt. Tabor Volunteer Fire Company.
Tom occupies his leisure time in many sporting activities including tennis, hunting, fishing, kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and hiking.
Tom was raised a Master Mason in 1988 at Rutland Lodge #79 in Rutland, Vermont which he served as Master 1991-1993. He is currently the Secretary of the Lodge. Tom is also a dual member of Marble Lodge #76 in Danby. He is a member of the Chapter, Council and Commandry, Davenport Chapter No. 17. a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory of the Valley of Burlington and the Council Valley of Rutland. He is a member of the E.J. Wildblood Vermont Lodge of Research, member of the Katherine Chapter #83, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Cairo Shriners of Rutland. Tom has served for many years as a board member of the Rutland Masonic Association and has served on numerous committees of the Grand Lodge of Vermont. He is Grand Representative to the Grand Lodge of Delaware. Tom served as District Deputy for the Fourth Masonic District 2001-2002.
In 2002 Tom was appointed the Grand Lecturer for the Grand Lodge of Vermont by Grand Master Theodore G. Corsones.
