Overview of the Five Steps in the Vermont Freemason CARE Program.
Step 1: Identification
Goal: To identify students who need help.
Step 2: Data Collection
Goal: To assemble a complete profile of a referred student's behaviors. This is achieved through the compilation of isolated pieces of information from a variety of sources. From this data the team can assess whether the student's behavior indicates the probability of a problem.
Step 3: Intervention
Goal: Acceptance and understanding by the student and family that a problem exists which needs their attention.
Step 4: Referral
Goal: To have the student receive a professional assessment of the problem and a referral for treatment if needed.
Step 5: Follow-up
Goal: To provide the student with support through the recovery period.
Through the Vermont State Department of Education, Office of Alcohol, and Drug Abuse Programs and the Vermont Agency of Human Services, the Freemasons of Vermont through the Grand Lodge of Vermont are sponsoring the entire CARE Program.
Each school Superintendent and Principal, across the state of Vermont, is notified as to when a CARE seminar is scheduled. For those teachers desiring to attend this seminar all expenses, except that of the substitute teachers, are paid for by the sponsor. The seminar is a three-day event and each participant becomes proficient as a Core Team Member in the CARE Program.
The objective is to bring the student's problem to light, to have the student and the parents realize the problem exists and will not go away on its own. Just this one function is very critical and requires extreme training.
CARE is working and already young people are receiving the help they need. The program does not place blame on either the student or the parents. It starts both on a road to extrication and inserting into the mainstream.
The Position of the Grand Lodge of VermontThe members of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Vermont have seen the need for a program such as CARE in the schools of Vermont for some time. Through coordination with the proper agencies of the State, the CARE Program was put in place. There is a cost factor to operating a program of this magnitude. However, Masonry does not place a given value on a child's life and therefore the cost is justified. |
